What is the Difference Between a Dhyana Mudra and a Bhumisparsha Mudra Buddha Statue?

What is the Difference Between a Dhyana Mudra and a Bhumisparsha Mudra Buddha Statue?

When we look at the Buddha statues in different mudras, we tend to wonder do they actually mean something or are they mere gestures taken by the lord? Well, there is a significant importance as well as difference between each and every mudra of the Buddha.

Do you know there are mudras depicted by the Buddha prior to as well as after attaining the enlightenment? Yes, you have guessed it right! Here, we are talking about dhyana mudra and bhumisparsha mudra of the Buddha.

It was Siddhartha Gautama that took dhyana mudra under the peepal tree in Gaya in search of the truth and sought enlightenment after putting arduous efforts. The enlightenment transformed Siddhartha Gautama into the Buddha. And once he attained the enlightenment, he called upon the Earth goddess (Bhudevi) by touching her on the ground to bear witness to the same. That is what we call as bhumisparsha mudra.

Criterion Dhyana Mudra Buddha Statue Bhumisparsha Mudra Buddha Statue
Origin The mudra was taken by the fourth dhyani Buddha called Amitābha. It was the Yogic mudra taken by the Buddha right before getting enlightened in the quest for spiritual perfection.  The mudra was postured by the dhyani Buddha named Akshobhya. When the demon king Mara asked the Buddha if there is someone who can bear witness to his enlightenment. The Buddha touched the Earth with the fingers of his right hand to call upon goddess Earth (Bhudevi) to bear witness to his enlightenment; which she did.
Appearance The statue looks in the form of a triangle symbolizing the 3 jewels of Buddhism. These jewels are named as the Buddha, the Sangha and the Dharma. Here, the palms of both the hands are immaculately placed upon the lap. The palms are facing upwards with the fingers extended in a normal manner. Buddha’s eyes do remain partially or completely closed to demonstrate the absolute clarity of thought.
Here, also the Buddha is sitting in meditating mudra only. But the primary difference is that here the Buddha has extended the fingers of his right hand towards the ground as a gesture of touching the Earth. The left hand has been placed upon the lap itself.
Vastu and Feng-Shui Effects The placement of this Buddha statue helps in transmission of a positive energy of self awareness and a relaxing inner peace.  It is the symbol of devoting oneself to human salvation. The presence of this Buddha transforms the delusion of anger into a mirror-like wisdom. The presence of this Buddha also marks a new beginning and ideally suited for those who wish to act upon one such thought.
Placement You can place this meditating Buddha statue in the living room, meditation/ Yoga room, or in the corner facing East to channelize the energy of the corner across the area of the room. A Bhumisparsha Buddha can be placed both indoor and outdoor, especially at the central area of the vicinity. It is advisable to always keep the statue facing East, the direction from where the Sun rises to eliminate darkness with light. Just as the enlightenment of the Buddha replaced ignorance with the eternal light of knowledge.
